Covington’s White Collar Unit Depleted by Exodus to Justice
23 Corporate Crime Reporter 5, January 27, 2009

It appears partners in Covington & Burling’s white collar defense group would prefer to prosecute corporate crime than defend it.

Let us count the ways.

Covington partner Eric Holder, of course, will be the new Attorney General.

Covington partner Lanny Breuer will be the new head of the Criminal Division.

Last October, Covington elevated twelve young associates into the firm's partnership ranks.

Of the twelve, three were in Covington’s white collar defense group.

Now all three – John Bies, James Garland, and Steven Fagell – will be following Holder and Breuer to Main Justice.

Bies, a graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, and Garland, a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law, will work out of Holder’s office.

Fagell, a graduate of Harvard Law School, will be working with Breuer.
