Patrick Fitzgerald to Keynote at NYU Prosecutor Conference
24 Corporate Crime Reporter 9, February 25, 2010

Prosecutors get into nasty conflicts.

Not just with defense counsel.

But with each other.

Think New York Attorney General’s office.

And any of the U.S. Attorneys in New York.

And the Manhattan DA.

Think AUSAs and Main Justice.

Think SEC and Main Justice.

Think district attorneys and state Attorney Generals.

Prosecutors have egos.

Turf battles abound.

So, why not have a conference to discuss the fault lines?

And stepping up to the plate is the NYU Law School’s Center on the Administration of Criminal Law.

The title of the conference: Allocating Prosecutorial Power: How Prosecutors Compete, Cooperate and Clash.

Keynote speaker – Chicago U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald.

The conference will be held April 22, 2010 in New York City.

There will be three panels, each addressing a different fault line.

Panel one – the federal/local fault line – think Justice Department v. Manhattan DA.

Panel two – the state AG/local DA fault line – think Eliot Spitzer v. Robert Morgenthau.

And panel three – Centralization and Cooperation: Is Strong Central Authority Necessary or Effective? – think an assistant U.S. Attorney being hauled in before some supervisor at Main Justice.

And remember – prosecutors also cooperate.

Panelists include:

Daniel R. Alonso, Chief Assistant District Attorney, Manhattan District Attorney's Office.

Rachel Barkow, Professor of Law, NYU School of Law.

Michael A. Battle, partner, Fulbright & Jaworski

Sara Sun Beale, Professor of Law, Duke Law School
